Marnus Labuschagne Left Out from Australian ODI Squad Against India
The Australian selectors have left out Labuschagne from Australia's three-game ODI series versus India, as in-form Queensland teammate Matt Renshaw getting a shock call-up.
Performance Issues Lead to Exclusion
Selectors dropped Labuschagne from the one-day international squad after scoring just one run in both of his innings during the top-end series against South Africa in August. He has a top score of 47 in his most recent ten ODI innings.
Labuschagne has featured in 68 one-day internationals and accumulated 1,871 ODI runs at an average of 34.64 runs per dismissal, but will now continue to press his claims a Test recall in time for the Ashes beginning in Perth on November 21.
Surprise Inclusion and Other Squad Updates
Labuschagne has shown signs of a resurgence with 160 for Queensland in the Sheffield Shield this week, while Renshaw scored a hundred for the Bulls in the same game against Tasmania.
The left-hander may to make his ODI debut in the forthcoming series against India after previously being selected in an ODI squad in 2022.
He has played 14 Test matches with the last coming in India in 2023 but is also hoping for a red-ball recall as Australia seek a solution to their batting top-order problems.
Bowling Additions and Injury News
Fast bowler Mitchell Starc returns for the ODI series against India after being rested since excelling for Australia in the clean sweep of West Indies in July.
BBL performer Mitch Owen might get his ODI debut after being concussed in the lead up to Australia’s last 50-over series against South Africa.
ODI captain Pat Cummins continues to be absent as he hopes to heal from a spinal issue in time to lead Australia in the opening Test of the Ashes in November.
Squad Selection Strategy and Fixtures
Australia have named a squad for only the first two T20s against India with the upcoming Ashes series, although Glenn Maxwell will miss all of the five-match series due to a wrist problem suffered in New Zealand.
Mitch Marsh will skipper both the ODI and T20 sides after scoring a hundred in the final game against New Zealand to secure a series clean sweep last week.
“Selectors have announced a squad for the ODI series and first two games of the T20 series as there will be rotation through the later stages of the series as individuals prepare for the cricket season through domestic first-class matches,” selection chief George Bailey said.
“The bulk of the T20 squad will stay as a group as it’s an important period in the build towards the T20 World Cup next year, however we are trying to strike a balance to ensure we simultaneously get ready specific players for the Test series ahead.”
Australia’s three-game ODI series against India commences on October 19 in Perth, before the rivals play five T20s from 29 October.
