Trump Administration Ready to Dispatch Scores Law Enforcement to San Francisco
The federal government was preparing on Wednesday to deploy numerous of law enforcement personnel to the Bay Area region for a major crackdown on immigration, triggering criticism from local politicians.
Specifics of the Mission
Specifics of the deployment were continuing to unfold, but it will reportedly involve over a hundred government officers, according to reports. The officers are expected to begin occupying the Coast Guard facility in across the bay, across the bay from San Francisco. It remained unclear whether national guard troops would participate.
Political Backlash
The deployment follows months of threats by the administration to take action against the Democratic-run city. Governor Gavin Newsom condemned the decision, calling it “right out of the authoritarian playbook”.
“He dispatches masked men, he dispatches border agents, he sends out federal agents, he generates concern and apprehension in the community so that he can claim credit for solving that by dispatching the national guard,” Newsom said. “This is no different than the incendiary extinguishing the blaze.”
Municipal Preparation
San Francisco is the most recent large urban area targeted by the administration's initiative of large-scale detentions. The operation is expected to trigger a confrontation between the federal government and municipal authorities who have pledged to stop paramilitary operations in the city.
San Franciscans have been preparing for an extended period for Trump to make good on ongoing warnings to dispatch personnel to the city. At a Wednesday afternoon press conference, San Francisco’s mayor stated again that the city was equipped.
“Over recent weeks, we have been anticipating the likelihood of a potential federal deployment in our city,” said the mayor, noting that he had implemented additional measures on Wednesday to “bolster the city’s protection of our foreign-born residents, and ensure our departments are organized before any federal deployment.”
Legal Framework
Despite legal challenges to missions in a multiple urban areas, including Chicago, Oregon and LA, Trump has declared “unquestioned power” to deploy the national guard in cities, pointing to the Insurrection Act which enables presidents limited power to send forces on domestic land.
Local Reaction
Newsom, who previously served as San Francisco’s city leader – had vowed to step in “immediately” to a deployment in the city. “The idea that the national administration can dispatch personnel into our cities with no justification based on facts, no monitoring, no accountability, no respect for local authority – it represents an infringement on the legal system,” he said on Wednesday.
Public associations, including civil rights groups created during the previous presidential term, have prepared to swiftly gather a large protest in the city, as well as vigils at local libraries.
Local Consequences
In San Francisco’s Mission district, a mostly Latin American community, city supervisor stated to media last week she and her constituents had been anticipating this time. “The time that people stop going to work, when minority individuals cannot move about freely without the concern of national personnel targeting based on race and arresting them, the moment when families keep children home, are too scared to go to the grocery store or physician,” she said. “The readiness efforts in the Mission is essentially a closure the likes of which we have not witnessed since Covid.”
National Guard Status
About 300 out of several thousand regional state soldiers stay under federal control under an command from Trump. About 200 of them had been dispatched to Oregon, where they were waiting in limbo in the midst of a judicial dispute over their assignment.
This week, Newsom said he had summoned the local soldiers under his authority to manage food banks during the government shutdown.
