British authorities has added eleven further destinations to its public advisory register regarding the threats of methanol poisoning from contaminated alcoholic drinks.

The updated advisory now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda due to what officials describe as "an international surge in the incidence of reported cases" of methanol contamination.

Just a few weeks ago, the government had previously placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing register, in response to multiple high-profile incidents such as the fatal demise of half a dozen travelers in Laos in 2024.

Travellers are being advised that as little as small amounts of methanol can result in permanent eye damage or death within 12 to 48 hrs.

Exactly what is Industrial Alcohol and How is it Utilized?

Toxic alcohol is a poisonous industrial alcohol typically employed in antifreeze, windscreen washer fluid, and paint thinner. This substance is not designed for ingestion.

While it is naturally produced during the manufacture of beverages, licensed producers bring it down to low, safe levels for human consumption through the purification method.

However in certain nations, it is surreptitiously added into beverages to save money, and because it is flavorless and scentless, it is very difficult to identify.

Government Advice for Tourists

Government minister a senior official said that all travellers should know the symptoms of toxic alcohol toxicity.

"While drinking spirits overseas, opt for trusted places and avoid local brews or unspecified beverages," the official warned.

"If something appears suspicious, like a hangover that's way worse than typical or sight issues – contact a doctor immediately."

The full register of nations identified as presenting a danger of industrial alcohol toxicity presently covers: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
